Careers

The Montclair Environmental Society is a small organization with limited resources. Thankfully, a recently obtained grant has allowed us to create the position of full-time Environmental Advisor.

Candidates for this position should have at least a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies, Biology, Earth Studies, Geology, Chemistry, or a related field. Additionally, the ideal candidate would have at least three years experience in non-profit work, environmental improvements, outreach, and education.

In this position, the ideal candidate would be expected to identify specific environmental concerns in the surrounding area and craft solutions to the problem. The candidate would be responsible for the creation and scientific evaluation of all educational and outreach materials, and be willing to give presentations to local community organizations (including, but not limited to: schools, churches, activist groups, and other environmental groups). The ideal candidate would also be responsible for assisting the MES manager in administrative affairs, outreach activities, strategy planning, and communication management.

The Montclair Environmental Society also seeks three seasonal interns, who are expected to work with MES during either the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters. Interns should be studying a relevant academic discipline, show a strong commitment to environmental betterment, and be willing to engage in hands-on field-work and outreach. Academic credit should be given for the internship, and a small stipend for meals and travel will be awarded on a bi-weekly basis.

In order to apply for any of the above positions, please send a cover letter and address to:

How To Get Involved

The Montclair Environmental Society depends on your support to protect our environment and encourage green practices. Our primary need is donations. Monetary assistance is tax-deductible and is only used for MES activities and to pay the salaries of one full-time manager. If you are interested in making a donation, please visit our PayPal account or contact our offices.

We understand that in these tough economic times, money can be tight. We appreciate any little amount of help. However, if you would prefer to donate your time and service, we would be equally thankful and gracious! Please feel free to visit one of our events, contact us online, or stop by our offices! Big or small, rich or poor, young or old, there is always a way to help the environment. Remember that the surrounding area is YOUR community too!

What We Do

Our activities can be grouped into four categories: field activity, education, outreach, and administration/coordination. Our primary focus is on the environment surrounding Montclair. At least twice a month, we coordinate hikes or volunteer clean-ups of parks, water bodies, and wooded areas. In addition to our regular schedule of field events, we occasionally will embark on more ambitious projects such as tree planting and large-scale cleanups. Our activities are dependent on continued volunteer funding and grants; without your support, our efforts would not be possible.

MES is also committed to educating local residents about how they can improve their environmental impact. Once a month, we hold an event in front of our offices where residents can learn about various environmental practices. In partnership with other local government agencies and environmental groups, we provide resources about how residents can begin recycling and improve the energy efficiency of their homes. At our monthly events, residents can also obtain literature about the economic and environmental impacts of energy consumption, pollution, habitat destruction, and waste disposal.

In addition to our monthly educational event, volunteers associated with MES regularly visit local schools and colleges. During these visits, students and educators can learn more about how to “go green” and positively contribute to the local environment.

As stated earlier, MES is entirely dependent on volunteer support. At our monthly event, local visits, and home office, interested individuals can sign up to join our various activities. Those of associated with MES are really and willing to explain how you can contribute, financially or otherwise. Please be sure to visit our How To Get Involved page for more information.

Finally, a significant portion of our time is dedicated to administrative matters. Our volunteer Board of Directors oversees many legal and organizational issues. We are also lucky to have a full-time Manager of our offices, John Doe. John holds a Masters degree in Earth & Environmental Studies from Montclair State University, and has been involved in local environmental issues for over two decades. Most event and field coordination is undertaken by a dedicated group of volunteers, with the assistance of three interns.

About Us

In late 2009, a group of local scientists, educators, and activists began to discuss the local community’s lack of commitment to environmental health and sustainable living. Concerned that existing community structures were not enough to protect the environment and encourage “going green”, plans were adopted to found the Montclair Environmental Society. Our mission statement was soon adopted, and reads as follows:

We are a coalition of residents committed to improving the environment surrounding Montclair, New Jersey. We seek to clean the local area, prevent environmental degradation, encourage sustainable living, raise awareness, and positively contribute to our community. We reject the politicization of science, efforts to weaken environmental protections, degradation of natural habitats, and “dirty” living.

In 2010, MES was formally created as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. A Board of Directors has been created, which consists of unpaid volunteer members of the community. We operate exclusively on donations, fundraising, grants, and volunteer activity. All funding goes to maintaining a small office area, overhead, supplies, educational materials, and event expenses. Additionally, we are nonpartisan and refrain from any political activity or lobbying. Our efforts are focused exclusively on environmental improvement and outreach.
